Right Livelihood Award
It was established in 1980 by philanthropist Jakob von Uexküll. An international jury selects laureates in fields such as environmental protection, human rights, sustainable development, health, education, and peace. The prize money of €200,000 is shared among usually four recipients, one of whom may receive an honorary award without share of the funds. The awards ceremony is held each early December in the Parliament building in Stockholm. Nominations are open to the public, and the award is often referred to as the "Alternative Nobel Prize".

History
In 1979, Jakob von Uexküll attempted to persuade the Nobel Foundation to create new prizes in areas such as environmental protection and human rights, but was rejected and went on to establish the award in 1980. Initial funding came from the sale of his stamp collection. The first awards were presented that same year and have been held annually since. From 1985 the ceremony has taken place in the old Parliament building in Stockholm. The award is financed by donations and governed by a board of five regular members who invite an international jury.
