Abel Prize
Named after mathematician Niels Henrik Abel and modeled on the Nobel Prizes, the Abel Prize was established in 2003. Laureates are selected by a committee appointed by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and announced each March. The award includes a gold medal, a diploma, and a monetary prize of 7.5 million Norwegian kroner as of 2025. The ceremony is held in the aula of the University of Oslo. The prize may be shared by up to three recipients and is awarded posthumously only if the laureate dies after the announcement.
