Explanation
José Echegaray was a Spanish playwright who also taught mathematics. Theaters in Spain had grown less lively, and people missed the classics of the “Golden Age.” He created brave characters and strong emotions, bringing old traditions back in a fresh style. Because his plays made audiences laugh and cry again, theatres became popular once more. His stories were read in schools and helped show Spanish culture to the world. For this achievement he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
