Explanation

The world looks balanced left and right, yet in the tiniest world that balance can suddenly break. Yoichiro Nambu found a rule that explains how this “break” happens. Just like a perfectly upright pencil that finally tips in one direction to lower its energy, particles choose a direction to stay in their lowest-energy state. The visible symmetry seems broken, but an underlying rule is still there. Nambu’s idea became the basis for understanding the Higgs particle, superconductivity, and many big experiments that explore the universe.

Related Keywords

spontaneous symmetry breaking

A phenomenon in which the minimum-energy state (vacuum) of a theory chooses a configuration that does not respect the full symmetry of the underlying equations. It leads to massless Goldstone bosons or, in gauged cases, massive Higgs bosons. The idea is universal, appearing in cosmic phase transitions, condensed-matter ordering, and the Standard Model’s mass generation.

Goldstone boson

A massless excitation that inevitably arises when a continuous symmetry is spontaneously broken. Examples include pions and magnons. Goldstone bosons dominate low-energy effective theories and find applications from spin-wave physics to lattice vibrations.

Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model

An effective theory with four-fermion interactions describing dynamical mass generation and chiral symmetry breaking. It remains a workhorse in lattice QCD and dense-quark-matter studies, and Nambu’s original papers are still widely cited.

Higgs mechanism

A process in which gauge fields absorb Goldstone modes and become massive. It generalizes Nambu’s spontaneous symmetry breaking idea and is essential to electroweak unification. The 2012 discovery of the Higgs particle confirmed the mechanism.

vacuum expectation value

The average of a field operator in the vacuum state. When symmetry is broken, ⟨0|φ|0⟩ becomes non-zero and acts as an order parameter, determining particle masses and critical behavior in phase transitions.

BCS theory

A theory of superconductivity in which electron pairs condense and an energy gap forms. Nambu transplanted BCS mathematics to particle physics, crystallizing the concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking.
